Freight Elevator Plunge Injures 22

A freight elevator being used illegally as a passenger elevator plunged at least three stories in a Flatiron district building Wednesday morning, injuring nearly two dozen people, the authorities said.
A Fire Department spokesman said that the elevator suddenly dropped around 6:55 a.m.
All 22 passengers in the elevator had “whiplash-like injuries” and were taken to hospitals, the spokesman added. Nine of the injuries were listed as serious but not life threatening. Fire officials said the elevator dropped three stories, while a spokeswoman for the Police Department said it fell four.
A defective brake caused the accident, Tony Sclafani, a spokesman for the Department of Buildings, said Wednesday afternoon. There had been no violations issued for the elevator in the last 15 years, Mr. Sclafani said. It was last inspected in December.
The building manager’s, Mike Cantanzaro, was unavailable for comment
